"Spirit Of The Hokianga"

"You'd be amazed at how many churches the early Catholic missionaries built around the west coast of the Hokianga - this is St. Gabriels church, but there are actually two more that are visible in the distance! Having scoped the area the day before, I returned on this painterly dawn & waited for the sun to rise, my timing with the developing sky was perfect. Two local men armed with spears were catching flounder & the cows were wandering on the beach, which really typifies these parts. A very remote, but utterly beautiful place!"
